Modesto Christian’s Gary Porter, Livingston’s Angelo Naldi set to coach boys at 6 County All-Star Senior Basketball Game

All-star games are all about big names, and two of the biggest will be on hand Friday night at the 6 County All-Star Senior Basketball game at Gregori High School.

Sure, we could be talking about Stanislaus District Players of the Year Rolaun Dunham of Riverbank and Modesto Christian’s Lexi Tubbs … both will lace up their sneakers for Friday night’s game.

But we’re really talking about Angelo Naldi and Gary Porter, two longtime coaches in the Stanislaus District and two of the nicest guys you’d care to meet. They’ll be feted as honorary coaches for the boys game.

So while this is your last chance to see Dunham and Tubbs before they toddle off to their respective colleges, it’s also the last time you’ll get to see Naldi and Porter on the sidelines, who announced their retirements last season.

Naldi coached 33 years at Livingston High, while Porter coached 18 at Modesto Christian and won 16 Sac-Joaquin Section championships and two state championships.

“I’ve never met Gary, but I certainly know of him,” said Naldi, who played at Livingston High and later at Merced College. “It’s a very nice honor. When Bobby (Cole) called and asked me to do this, how could I say no?”

The girls game tips off at 6 p.m., while the boys game gets underway at 8 p.m.

Naldi said he won’t have to fight any urges to get up and yell at the officials.

“Those days are long gone,” said Naldi. “I learned that it wasn’t productive to yell at the officials. It didn’t make my kids any taller.”

Naldi will sit on the Blue Team bench, joining head coach Scott Thomason of Manteca’s Sierra High and assistant Tyrell Jenkins of Pacheco.

Porter will be on the Red Team bench with head coach Jeff Jennings of Riverbank, who guided the Bruins to their first-ever victory in the Northern California regional tournament. Mariposa’s Cory Edmiston will assist.

In the girls game, the Blue Team will be coached by Patterson’s Elizabeth Tolleson, who led the Tigers to the Northern California regional tournament for the first time in school history. She’ll be assisted by J.R. Davis of Atwater.

Enochs’ Curtis Reynolds will coach the girls’ Red Team and he’ll be assisted by Riverbank’s Lupe Galindo.

At halftime of the girls contest, Modesto Christian’s state championship team will be honored.
