Carolyn List: Bundy has gotten his share of welfare, too

April 30, 2014

I have followed the story of Cliven Bundy, the rancher who mounted an armed resistance when federal authorities attempted to round up his cattle, which he has grazed on public lands for 20 years without paying the nominal grazing fees. Politician and media support quickly pulled back when he began expounding his views on black people “under government subsidy.”

But hasn’t Bundy just been slurping from a different place in the public trough? He has run his enterprise on public lands for which he has paid no mortgage, taxes nor upkeep. He decided not to pay any grazing fees when he was asked not to graze on public lands during the short mating season of an endangered species. His unpaid fees with late penalties have amounted to over $1 million during the last 20 years.

Why does Cliven Bundy feel he is entitled to government support? Had someone managed to extort $1 million in welfare, I am fairly certain Bundy would be in the front of the crowd screeching about “welfare fraud.” He and his supporters need to look in the mirror and see the hypocrisy.
