Modesto postmaster sworn in

April 24, 2014

JJ Cowans Postmaster

Jennifer Gowans is sworn in and formally installed Thursday morning as new postmaster of the Modesto Main Post Office by Rep. Jeff Denham, R-Turlock. Gowans had been serving as interim postmaster of the Kearney Avenue office since Steve Tomlins retired last summer. Gowans joined the U.S. Postal Service in 1985 and began working her way up through the ranks. “I started in Modesto, and this is where I’ll stay until the end of my career,” she told a gathering of about 40 people that included family members, co-workers, representatives of various political officeholders and other current or former area postmasters. Gowans becomes the eighth postmaster of the Modesto Main office since it opened in 1962, according to the Postal Service website. Postmasters take the same oath as the president of the United States.
