Volunteers for special events


NEEDED: Through Sept. 14. Volunteers, ages 16 and older, are needed to register walkers and teams; assist with the sales and set up of luminaries for the evening Luminary Ceremony honoring cancer victims; and help with other activities during the event and with cleanup at the conclusion of the event at all sites. Relay for Life brings together more than 3.5 million people to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer; remember loved ones lost to the disease; and fight back against cancer. The 24-hour relay dates include Saturday-next Sunday, Hilmar, Merced, Oakdale; May 2-3, Hughson High School; May 3-4, Manteca, Turlock; May 17-18, Mariposa, Modesto, Patterson, Ripon, Sonora; May 31-June 1, Waterford; June 21-22, Escalon, Riverbank; Sept. 13-14, Atwater. Teams also are invited to sign up, gather pledges and participate to raise money for the fight against cancer.

NEEDED: Volunteers 16 and older to assist with 13th annual Truckin’ for Hospice Motorcycle & Car Rally on June 21. Volunteers needed to clean up (tear down of tables, chairs, tents, etc.) at 2:30 p.m. Presented by the California Trucking Association, this motorcycle/car rally/antique and working truck show starts at Dell’Osso Family Farm, Lathrop, and travels through the Mother Lode with stops along the 135-mile ride for refreshments, poker hands and a chance to win prizes. It concludes with a barbecue, live music and raffle in Manteca. Per person rider fee is $35 preregistration or $40 after June 11 and can be purchased online. Truck show entrance fees are $40 per person prior to June 11 and $50 after. Fee includes a commemorative T-shirt, run pin, poker hand, food and drink. Bikers, car enthusiasts and truckers are invited to raise funds for Community Hospice and Hospice of San Joaquin. Individuals and businesses are also invited to become sponsors.

NEEDED: Volunteers 18 and older will hit the streets May 13 throughout Ceres and Modesto, a partnership between the Salvation Army and The Modesto Bee, offering special edition newspapers to benefit thousands of at-risk children at the Red Shield. The newspapers are sold for $1 to support after-school tutoring and mentoring programs, homework computer labs, children’s lunch program, sports equipment and uniforms, swim lessons and facilities and more. Donation to the programs are also appreciated. Adult individuals, groups and businesses are needed to sell The Bee’s special Kids’ Day edition newspapers. A Kids’ Day Kick Off tour and fiesta luncheon for those interested in participating will be held at the Red Shield on May 8 at 11 a.m.

NEEDED: Volunteers 14 and older needed on June 21 to assist and encourage children and serve as “buddies” with the various activities throughout the farm. The event introduces children with disabilities (and kids at heart), to activities typically seen on a working farm, including horseback riding, hayrides, planting in the garden, arts and crafts, a petting zoo and a barbecue to celebrate the day of fun and adventure. Additional help is needed at each of the activity stations. Volunteers will receive an orientation from 9-10 a.m., help with set up, interact with their buddies from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and assist with clean up. Experience working around farm animals is helpful but not necessary. All volunteers must complete an application, and volunteers over age 18 must pass a background check. Volunteers are needed for this program which will take place at the Jim & Patti Sanchez Farms in Oakdale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

NEEDED: Volunteers needed 14 and older Monday-Friday to assist and encourage children as they learn to ride a two-wheeler bike through special adaptive equipment and volunteer support. The camp is Monday through Friday of spring break (for most students). Volunteers can choose a morning or evening session or volunteer all day, 8:45 a.m.-4 p.m. Lunch provided for those working the full day. All volunteers must complete an application, and volunteers over age 18 must pass a background check. Volunteers are needed for this program which will take place at Ustach Middle School.

NEEDED: Benefit to stop human trafficking. Volunteers 18 and older are needed to assist June 14 with set up, registration, race assistance, water stations, vendor assistance, assembling goody bags and clean up. This 5K-10K run/walk will be held at Tuolumne River Regional Park, 1198 Tioga Drive, Modesto, and will kick off at 7:30 a.m. Interested participants can register as a runner, walker, sponsor or team. Teams require five or more participants. Adult registration is $30 for the 5K and $40 for the 10K. Youth registration is $10 for the 5K and $20 for the 10K. All prices increase by $5 after June 1. Interested volunteers must attend an orientation on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
