Kadry on Bowling: Chatsworth bowler rallies for Modesto Masters victory

Chatsworth’s Eddie Van Daniker rallied out of the losers bracket to win the 18th Brunswick Modesto Masters Tournament and the $3,110 first prize at Yosemite Lanes.

Van Daniker was in 16thplace in Saturday’s qualifying rounds after averaging 243 for the seven games. The lead qualifier going into Sunday’s match play was Orangevale’s Austin Kircher, who averaged a whopping 261.

In match play, Van Daniker fell into the losers bracket in the semifinal round. He emerged to face the winners bracket leader, Nick Smith of Lincoln. Van Daniker won both matches to earn the title. Smith won $1,620.

The high-scoring tournament produced six 300 games, two 11-in-a-rows, and four 800-plus series. Local bowlers who made the final prize list include Rick Bates, Bob Neuerburg, Rich Custer, Ray Coronado, Wayne Garber, Jim Gordin, Ed Silva, Mikey Acosta, Steve Davis and Nick Kelley.

The trio of Debbie Couch, Deana Swickard and Cindy James claimed the win in the Ladies Trio Tournament at McHenry with their 2,398 total. Beth Sims teamed with Sherry Kuharich and Jackie Wilson to place second (2,355) while Rose Baker, Tena Cozby and Carol Hancock were third (2,314). ...

This Friday, two no-tap events are on the books. At 9:30 a.m., the Ladies Luncheon No-Tap Tournament runs at Yosemite. At 1 p.m., the Friday Senior No-Tap competes at McHenry. Check-in is at 12:30 p.m., potluck at noon. ... The Easter Egg Roll will be held at McHenry on Saturday at 4 p.m. for kids and their family and friends. Modesto will host the 45th annual California State Senior Open Championship this fall. The team event will run at Yosemite with doubles and singles at McHenry. The event runs for five weekends – Oct. 25-26, Nov. 1-2, Nov. 8-9, Nov. 15-16 and Nov. 22-23. The tournament is open to men and women age 50 and older. The four-person team event will have two divisions based on combined team age. Doubles and singles will both have three divisions based on ages. Deadline for registration is Sept. 15, but don’t wait too long – the tournament fills up fast. Entries are at the bowling desks. ...

Local scratch bowlers will have a chance to compete against the pros when the Vanessa Brown Homes PBA West Regional Tournament hits town May 9-11 at Yosemite Lanes. Registration information is online at pba.com. Online entries close at midnight May 5. For those bowlers that would like to bowl with some of the top names in bowling, pro-ams are running with the event. Two time slots are scheduled – May 9 at 3:30 p.m. and May 10 at 7:30 p.m. for adults, seniors and youth. Entries are available at both bowling centers.
