NUTS SHORTSTOP HITS FOR CYCLE IN LOSS

Modesto shortstop Trevor Story hit for the cycle on Monday afternoon against Visalia, but the Nuts still couldn’t claim their first victory of the season, losing in a 14-12 slugfest. Story opened the game with a solo home run and stayed hot at the plate, finishing with five hits, including a triple and a double. Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Nuts held a 12-8 lead after reliever Alving Mejias had posted 32/3 scoreless innings. But then the Rawhide tagged his replacement, Shane Broyles, for five runs on five hits in one inning pitched. The Nuts dropped to 0-5 on the season. The struggling Modesto pitching staff has now given up 51 runs in five games. Its failure Monday spoiled an offensive show that also featured a Jose Rivera grand slam. The Nuts and Rawhide play again at 6 tonight.
