NUTS LOOK TO AVOID BAKERSFIELD SWEEP

The Modesto Nuts have stumbled out of the starting gate. Their California League record fell to 0-3 Saturday night after their 12-4 loss to the Bakersfield Blaze at Sam Lynn Park. The Nuts never led after Jesse Winker launched a three-run homer in the first inning, en route to a six-RBI night, off Nuts starter Andrew Brown (0-1). Modesto’s Francisco Sosa stroked a two-run homer in the third, following a single by Rosell Herrera, but left the game later after he was hit by a pitch. The Nuts also scored in the fifth on Sean Dwyer’s RBI ground ball and a single by David Kandilas that tied the game 4-4. Modesto pitchers allowed 16 hits and have yielded double-digit hits in all three games. They’ll try to avoid a sweep today at noon.
