Nuts fall to 0-2 in young Cal League season

April 4, 2014

The Modesto Nuts, two games into the California League season, still seek their first win. They never led Friday night and were beaten by the Bakersfield Blaze 6-2 at Sam Lynn Park. Starter Ryan Gibbard (0-1) allowed three earned runs and six hits in three innings, though he didn’t receive much support from the offense. Modesto struck for its runs in the fifth on a two-run single to left by Rosell Herrera which followed singles by Sean Dwyer and Chris O’Dowd and a sacrifice by Juan Ciriaco. Herrera’s hit was the only one for Modesto in nine tries with men in scoring position. The Nuts totaled nine hits but stranded nine. The four-game series at Bakersfield continues tonight.
