Hearing set for driver in fatal crash

April 4, 2014

A judge has scheduled a preliminary hearing to start May 6 for a truck driver charged with the death of an Oakdale police officer in a crash last year. Defendant Jose Santos Hermosillo, 45, is accused of felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence in the death of Paul Katuszonek. Hermosillo also is charged with a misdemeanor for driving more hours than allowed under federal guidelines. Katuszonek was on his way to work after dropping off his daughter at his mother-in-law’s home. He stopped on Highway 132 for a road closure about a mile east of Faust Road. Author- ities have said the big-rig Hermosillo was driving slammed into the back of the officer’s Honda just after he had stopped at the Caltrans construction zone. At the conclusion of the hearing, the judge will determine whether there is enough evidence for Hermosillo to stand trial. The defendant remains in custody at the Stanislaus County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
