Karen Lozano: Thanks for a great Modesto race

March 28, 2014

Records were broken, tears were shed and sweat was in plentiful supply at Sunday’s 2014 Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon. The organizers, ShadowChase Running Club, are filled with pride with this year’s event. Congratulations to those who trained months to cross the finish line of our most successful event yet. We are especially thankful to our sponsors for believing in us, our neighbors, who are sometimes inconvenienced; and our volunteers, who put in countless hours, trading the glory of the finish for the glow of heavy lifting, picking up trash and standing for hours on street corners, not to mention countless nights to meetings and brainstorming. We applaud our Teens Run Modesto program. Nearly 200 students learned the power of perseverance and dedication, skills they can use for a lifetime.

We salute our adult training group coaches for convincing everyday residents they could do the extraordinary, leading them not only across the finish line but on an amazing life journey filled with new friendships and healthier lifestyles. Finally, we give a standing ovation to Heidi Ryan, who directed the first five years of the marathon but has chosen to retire. Her sacrifices are undeniable.
