FBI arrests 'bad bandit' suspect

March 27, 2014

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents on Thursday arrested Gerardo Orozco Lopez, 28, of Half Moon Bay on suspicion of committing eight bank robberies in California, including one each in Ripon and Turlock. Authorities had dubbed the man who robbed the banks the “Bad Beard Bandit” because he wore a cheap, dark costume beard in an apparent attempt to conceal his identity. The robberies earned the bandit a prominent role on the FBI’s wanted bank robber website, https://bankrobbers.fbi.gov. The robber didn’t display a weapon in any of the robberies but threatened that he had one, the FBI said. The robberies took place from Nov. 21 to Feb. 25. On Nov. 21, the bandit struck at a Bank of the West on Main Street in Ripon. A Feb. 5 robbery occurred at Citibank on Geer Road in Turlock.
