Blaze destroys Turlock church's kitchen

March 27, 2014

Firefighters in Turlock responded to a kitchen fire at a Berkeley Avenue church, authorities said. According to a news release from the Turlock Fire Department, the fire broke out in the social hall of St. Thomas Church at 4:37 p.m. Wednesday. Crews arrived to find smoke and fire in the kitchen area of the hall, a separate building behind the church. After a search determined nobody was inside the building, they controlled the fire within 15 minutes, and spent two hours more on site. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, started by workers cleaning paint in the kitchen area. The kitchen was a total loss; the rest of the building sustained heavy smoke damage. Total damage was estimated at $100,000.
