Local digest: Modesto Junior College baseball fizzles against Cosumnes River

The Modesto Junior College baseball team failed to replicate its dramatic eight-run comeback win from Friday, losing to Cosumnes River 7-1 on Tuesday.

Cosumnes (13-6, 1-3 Big 8 Conference) scored four runs in the top of the eighth to blow open a close game. MJC (16-2, 2-2) scored its only run in the bottom of the eighth.

MJC softball pounded

The Lady Pirates couldn’t keep up with Delta College on Tuesday, dropping an 11-1 decision to fall to 1-5 in the Big 8 Conference and 5-15 overall.

MJC fell behind 2-0 after one inning, then pulled to within a run on Briana Villa’s home run. But that was as close as the Pirates could get as Delta scored six runs in the third inning and added three more in the sixth.

MJC tennis sweeps Mission

The Pirates cruised to a 9-0 victory over Mission College in a nonconference matchup. Bryce Purser beat Erwine Flores 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match. Purser then teamed with Javier Lagarde-Soto to win the No. 1 doubles match.

The Pirates (5-2 Big 8 Conference) improved to 9-2 overall. MJC takes on American River College, the third-ranked team in Northern California, at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Warriors’ Ferreria honored

Cal State Stanislaus’ Skippy Ferreria has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Player of the Week for the week of Mar. 10-16. The Warriors’ junior leadoff hitter went 13 for 18 for a .722 batting average in four games played.
