Modesto — A 27-year-old Oakdale man was killed Monday evening when his motorcycle plowed into the side of a sport utility vehicle on McHenry Avenue near Coralwood Road, closing down a portion of the busy thoroughfare for hours, Modesto police reported.
The identity of the victim wasnt available.
Emergency medical personnel performed CPR at the scene on the man, who was wearing a full-face helmet at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.
No other injuries were reported in the 5:30 p.m. crash.
The crash closed down McHenry from Union to Pelandale avenues to allow emergency vehicles to move in and out of the area and to let police conduct their investigation.
Police said the man, who was riding a Honda motorcycle, was northbound on McHenry when he came to a stop for a red light at Union.
When the light changed to green, police said, the motorcyclist took off at high speed. He was about 500 feet from the pack of cars behind him when the crash occurred.
Police said a Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Rolando Cruz, 37, of Modesto was southbound on McHenry when Cruz pulled into the center turn lane at Coralwood. Officers said Cruz waited for a pedestrian who was crossing Coralwood before attempting to turn left.
As Cruz started to turn onto Coralwood, police said, the motorcycle slammed into the rear passenger side of the Trailblazer.
Cruz stopped immediately after the crash and cooperated with officers at the scene. Investigators are checking surveillance recordings from nearby businesses for additional information about the crash.
Police said neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to have been factors in the crash.
