Jeff Jardines column Where did free speech activism go? (Page A-1, March 9) was timely. One of the biggest threats to our way of life is the apathy of people. Local, state and federal governments are taking advantage of (and counting on) a lazy, uneducated, unaware, uncaring populace.
The city of Modesto is attempting to keep interested residents from speaking out on the courthouse location plan, and they will probably get their way.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently upheld a Bay Area school districts decision to prohibit the wearing of American flag shirts on campus on May 5. I hope that this year on May 5, students of all ethnicities will wear American flag shirts to school to protest this unreasonable restriction of their free speech.
The First Amendment was written to limit government power. When the government overreaches, its up to us to stop them.
