Live Blog: CIF State Meet Wrestling, Day 2

March 8, 2014

9:49 p.m. Folsom's Nick Fiegener wins at 182, La Costa Canyon's Ian Baker wins by decision at 195, Jeramy Sweany of Vacaville wins 2-1 at 220, and in the heavyweight division, Clovis High's Nick Nevills becomes the first-ever three-time heavyweight champion of California with a second-period pin of Roosevelt's Nour Abdullatif.

8:56 p.m. Unbeaten Anthony Valencia of St. John Bosco defeated Bryce Martin of Bakersfield 14-4 for 170 state title.

7:30 p.m. >Colt Doyle of Poway wins 160 state title 8-5 over Kaleio Romero of Oakmont. In previous blog, we miss-ID'd the weight. Paul Fox won the 152s.

7:30 p.m. Paul Fox of Gilroy defeated P.J. Klee of Cardinal Newman 3-1 in 160 state final. Klee can't wait to run off the stage. Crowd boos.

7:30 p.m. It's a Saavedra kind of night in Bakersfield. Modesto senior Emilio Saavedro goes out a state champion after his 5-4 win over Mike Longo of Santiago/Corona for the 138 title. His victory came only 45 minutes after younger brother Israel won his second straight. And they both won 5-4. Emilio built a 5-2 lead in the third round and held on at the end. He was charged for a stalling point in the final seconds as he happily jogged in a circle. Funny, but Israel was stoic. Emilio's joy jumped out his skin. He literally jumped off the stage and into the arms of his father, Modesto coach Angel Saavedra. In the 120 final, Zahid Valencia of St. John Bosco pinned Wyatt Wyckoff of Paradise. In the 145 final, Niko Villarreal of Gilroy defeated Chris Garcia 11-6.

7:30 p.m. Michael Knoblauch of Clovis West defeats Mason Pengilly of Porterville 7-6 for the 126 title. Some members of the crowd that Pengilly tied it in the third period with a near-fall. Official signaled only a takedown.

7:47 p.m.

7:30 p.m. Matt Gamble of Monache edges Robert Garcia of Selma 4-3 for 113 title.

7:25 p.m. In the 106 final, Justin Mejia of Clovis, a freshman, held on to beat Chris Lacayo of Santiago/Corona 5-3.

6:40 p.m. Festivities have begun at Bakersfield's Rabobank Arena for the finals of the 42nd CIF Wrestling Championships. A field of 560 wrestlers, from schools big and small and public and private, qualified to get here and began competition Friday morning night. Tonight, 28 are left for the title matches in each of the 14 weight classes. Two are brothers from Modesto High--sophomore Israel Saavedra and senior Emilio Saavedra. Israel won the 113s as a freshman in 2013. This is Emilio's first, and last, title match before he moves on to Old Dominion.

2:35 p.m. All matches are complete other than the championship matches. The championships are scheduled to begin at 7:15. Your Stanislaus District wrestlers in the championships are Modesto's Israel Saavedra, who faces Vacaville's Gionn Peralta at 120, and Modesto's Emilio Saavedra, who will wrestle Mike Longo of Santiago-Corona, the Southern Section champion, at 138.

2:05 p.m. Turlock's Albino Orozco takes seventh place by default after his opponent, Seth Morales of Bonita High, forfeits.

1:23 p.m. Enochs' McCoy Kent takes third place in the 138-pound bracket with a 3-2 victory over Poway's Sergio Enloe. Kent tied the match 1-1 with an escape with 45 seconds remaining in regulation, then scored a takedown at 0:30. Enloe scored a 1-point escape at 0:15, but couldn't get the takedown to retake the lead. Enloe was the San Diego Section champion, making him the second section champ Kent defeated this weekend after he took down the Central Section champion yesterday. Kent went 0-2 at state last year.

1:04 p.m. Modesto's Angel Velasquez finished fourth after a 3-1 loss to Kristian Vasquez of ML King, the Southern Section runner-up. He gave up a second-period takedown and a third-period escape. Not bad for his first trip to state.

12:44 p.m. Nico Colunga falls short in his fifth-place match, losing 3-0 to Durbin Lloren. That's his second straight state medal. ...Enochs' McCoy Kent will wrestle for third in a while.

12:24 p.m. Escalon senior 220-pounder Dominic Freeseha was eliminated in 1st consolation round this morning. ...Under way are the 3rd, 5th and 7th-place matches. Going for 3rd is Modesto 126-pounder Angel Velasquez, and Albino Orozco of Turlock vies for 7th at 170. ...Modesto sits in 9th place in team standings.

12:15 p.m. Catching up with Escalon senior Tyler Lawrence (138), who dropped his "blood-round" match 4-2 to Joseph Dominguez of St. John Bosco. Lawrence shed a few deserved tears. Strong career. ...Turlock's Albino Orozco (170), who won once today, was beaten 6-0 by Brody Brand of Clovis. Orozco still has work ahead of him. ...Note: Oakdale junior Nico Colunga (113) has beaten both state finalists Matt Gamble of Monache and Robert Garcia of Selma. Colunga continued his busy morning with an 11-3 loss to Adrian Camposano of Central. A win would have put Colunga in 3rd-place match. ...Like Lawrence, Atwater's 220-pounder JoJo Ochoa bowed out in the thankless first consolation round today. He got his money's worth at State--6 matches and all of them close. ...Angel Velasquez of Modesto (126) threw his headgear and punch his fist into the air after his dramatic 3-2 win in 3 OT over Daniel Ruiz of Madera. As time expired, Velasquez--from the down position--somehow willed himself free of Ruiz's grasp. That was the difference and it puts Velasquez into 3rd-place match. Modesto is moving up in team standings, thanks mostly to the Saavedra brothers reaching the final but also because of Velasquez's 3 wins today. ...Emilio Saavedra's opponent in the 138 finals tonight is top-ranked Mike Longo of Santiago/Corona. Emilio is ranked third. Longo pinned Sergio Enloe of Poway late in the second round of his semi.

11:03 a.m. Oakdale's Nico Colunga advances to the 113-pound consolation semifinals with an 8-2 decision over Tristan Gilliland of Clovis. He'll face Central's Adrian Camposano in the next round. Camposano lost 7-3 in the championship semifinals.

10:45 a.m. Both Saavedra brothers are in the finals after Emilio defeats Uzo Owuoma of Bloomingdale 5-3 in overtime in the 138-pound semifinals. Saavedra had a takedown in the final seconds of regulation, but the referees called him for clasped hands, giving Owuoma a penalty point to tie the match 3-3. Saavedra got the takedown in the first overtime period. ... in the 220-pound consolations, Atwater's JoJo Ochoa is out after a 3-1 loss. Ochoa conceded an escape at the start of the third period, but couldn't pull off the takedown to tie it.

10:15 a.m. Israel Saavedra's opponent in the final will be his "old" rival Gionn Peralta of Vacaville, who advanced with a dramatic overtime pin over Jacob Donato of James Logan. Saavedra and Peralta met two weeks ago in the Section D-1 AA final at Johansen. Saavedra's 3rd-round reversal won it 2-1. These two were born to meet on the big stage. They're bona fide stars with the credentials to prove it. ...Clutch win in 170 consolation by Turlock's ALbino Orozco 2-0 in OT over section foe Will Sumner of Nevada Union. A lot of emotion from both Orozco and coach Mike Contreras after it was done. Orozco grinded through the 3rd period on top but just couldn't get it done. He didn't waste any time in the OT. So far, the district is 5-0 this morning.

9:54 a.m. Modesto sophomore Israel Saavedra (120) will vie for his 2nd straight state title tonight. He dominated Yoshito Funakoshi of West Torrance, the Southern Section runner-up with a 3rd-round pin. Saavedra, the 106-pound state champ in 2013, waded through Funakoshi's pawing at him in the face and eventually took him down in the second round and nearly pinned him. In the third round, Saavedra flipped him from the down position and finished him off after building a 6-0 lead. Typical efficiency from one of the state's best.

9:45 a.m. While we await Israel Saavedra's semifinal, a note: All three who've won today--Nico Colunga of Oakdale, McCoy Kent of Enochs and Angel Velasquez of Modesto, were serious contenders. Each one of them lost tough matches in the championship bracket, bouts that could have gone their way, against legit guys.

9:05: Stanislaus District wrestlers are off to a good start this morning. Nico Colunga of Oakdale (113) took a quick lead, extended it with a reversal late in the second round and hung on for a 4-3 win over Dean Parker of Centennial 4-3. Colunga gave up a takedown as time expired. Lots of hugs from coaches and loved ones. ..Angel Velasquez (126) of Modesto also built a lead and eliminated Zander Wick of San Marino 6-4. This is the win-it-to-stay-in-it round. ...McCoy Kent of Enochs (138) also advanced by stopping Chris Lane of Clovis West 12-7. Solid win for Kent, the Central Section champ. He took out the Central Section champ.
