Eugene L. Conrotto: Shirley Temple helped us through hard times

Shirley Temple’s death rattled me. We are of the same age. While she sang and danced her way through, I sat in a darkened movie theater and dreamed my way through the Great Depression.

The Strand Theater in Gilroy charged 11 cents for a temporary escape from reality. My reality was my father hesitating to cough up the 11 cents. Times were bad. Shirley helped.
