Alan Seliger: Don’t compare Arizona to Uganda

March 3, 2014

Without a doubt, the editorial cartoon that appeared in the Feb. 27 Modesto Bee, “ Map of the Western United States,” signaled an all-time low in editorial integrity for the McClatchy newspapers, especially since the cartoon was created by The Sacramento Bee’s own artist.

Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona did the right thing by vetoing the discriminatory law against gays. But to compare Arizona to Uganda, where gays are beaten and hacked to death, is not only a slap in the face to the people of Arizona, but also a sad sign that a progressive newspaper has lost all sense of decency.
