Jerry Stokes started as a customer of Batteries Plus Bulbs. Now, he owns two franchises.
I needed to get a battery for my daughters car, said Stokes, a Modesto native. He went into a Batteries Plus Bulbs store at a good time. I was looking for a business opportunity, and I thought, I could do this.
He opened a store on McHenry Avenue in Modesto two years ago and recently followed up with a franchise in Turlock, which opened two weeks ago on Monte Vista Avenue.
The stores offer more than 45,000 types of light bulbs and batteries, the latter for everything from cellphones to home alarm systems. On the slight chance they dont have it, they can order it, Stokes said.
Its a niche market, but a niche everyone has. Stokes supplied an interesting fact: On average, each household has 28 battery-operated devices and 61 sockets.
The stores also offer free battery testing, so you can check to make sure its the battery not the device that isnt working.
Its a service we provide, Stokes said, reasoning, We may lose a sale but we gain a customer.
The Modesto store is at 3000 McHenry Ave., (209) 529-0600. The Turlock store is at 3204 W. Monte Vista Ave., (209) 632-0600. Both stores are open daily.
