Marvin and Carolanne Narbaitz set out more than 30 years ago to build their dream home from the ground up.
They purchased an empty corner lot in the Bloomfield development at 3824 Marigold Lane and began working on their dream.
“You put the house in the yard,” Marvin Narbaitz said in a news release from the Modesto Garden Club, which bestowed the couple with Garden of the Month honors for March.
It took 11/2 years to build their custom home, according to the release. They added a pool to the backyard and had all the dirt from that project taken to the front yard as they tried to determine what kind of landscape they wanted.
Five years later, they made their final decision.
The couple planted several black pines, placed 17 tons of rock and planted different varieties of plants in their front yard, based on a plan by Modesto designer and landscaper Nathan Masellis.
Today, passers-by can slow down to enjoy the relaxing sounds of a water feature. The house is lined with colorful bamboo plants, shaped wax leaf privits, cypress, society garlic plants, Flaz, Heuchra and boxwoods.
