SALIDA — When armed and masked intruders grabbed Martha Domiguez, her husband and son jumped into action. David and Cristian Dominguez fought off the attackers Wednesday night, buying time for Martha and her younger son, DAngelo, to escape to a neighbors house.
David Dominguez and 15-year-old Cristian both suffered shotgun wounds. The father, 41, is recuperating at a local hospital. Cristian, who wrestles for Central Catholic, will be on the mat at the Sac-Joaquin Section Wrestling Championships in Stockton this morning.
Ive put in too much time to not at least try, Cristian said Thursday.
It began at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Dominguez home, located in a quiet Salida cul-de-sac near Modesto Christian High School.
According to neighbor Ed Silveira, a man rang the doorbell at the Dominguez familys Sun Valley Court home and told Martha Dominguez they were looking for her 18-year-old son, Dominic.
They said Dominic had called and asked them to pick him up, Silveira said. Martha and David Dominguez told the man Dominic wasnt home. Thats when the man and three accomplices, wearing white bandanas, forced their way into the house.
One suspect stayed downstairs, holding David and DAngelo, 11, at gunpoint while the other suspects went upstairs and found Cristian in his room, doing homework, Silveira said. They said, Give us your Beats, your Jordans and your jewelry, he said. Beats are high-end headphones used for listening to music; Jordans are expensive sneakers. They thought they had all this stuff.
The men forced Cristian downstairs. One of the suspects grabbed Martha Dominguez, and her husband jumped up and fought back. As the suspects pointed a gun at his dad, Cristian also started struggling with them while his mother and DAngelo ran to Silveiras home for help.
The gun went off; some of the blast struck David Dominguez in the back. Cristian was hit in the arm, but he didnt realize it at that point.
David Dominguez ran over and started pounding on the Silveiras door, saying hed been shot. Seth Silveira, 15, immediately came to his aid. I grabbed my jacket and applied pressure to the gunshot wound, Seth said. Asked how he knew he should do that, he shrugged. Instinct.
David Dominguez also had been hit in the head with the gun, requiring stitches, Ed Silveira said. The suspects soon ran to a nearby Jeep-type vehicle and took off, he said.
Cristian ran back upstairs to his room. When he didnt hear anything outside, he came out and realized the assailants had left. He also realized his arm was bleeding, and thats when he knew he had been shot.
Stanislaus County sheriffs deputies set up a perimeter around the home in the cul-de-sac a block west of Sisk Road and called in the special weapons and tactics team to search the house and ensure nobody remained behind.
Thursday, DAngelo Dominguez stayed with the Silveiras while his parents were at the hospital. Cristian was treated and released. He said his father was improving, walking and talking.
He wants to go home, but they wont let him yet, Cristian said.
DAngelo said he was doing OK. He also said his brother is going to do more than just show up to wrestle Friday. Hes going to win it for my dad.
