Two cited on selling alcohol to minors

February 26, 2014

Police in Modesto cited two people on charges of selling alcohol to minors. According to a news release, police conducted a decoy operation Tuesday.

Minors, working under officers’ supervision, tried to buy alcohol from 16 stores in Modesto.

They were successful on two occasions, one in which a clerk sold alcohol and another in which an adult shopper bought it. Police conduct these checks regularly to reduce the availability of alcohol to minors. When the program began in the 1980s, the violation rate often was as high as 40 percent or 50 percent. In recent years, that has sunk to about 10 percent.
