— Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputies on Monday identified the victim in a Sunday afternoon shooting in south Modesto as a 36-year-old Delhi man.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, Oscar Nunez was shot in the 300 block of Olivero Road.

Deputies were called to the area at 5:15 p.m. on a report of shots fired. When they arrived, they found Nunez in a small field between homes. He had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses apparently waited 45 minutes to an hour after the shots were fired to call authorities, deputies learned. Detectives had made no arrests and are seeking the public’s help in finding suspects.

Nunez frequently had been seen in the area of the shooting, authorities said.

It was the fourth homicide of the year in Stanislaus County, and the fourth in as many years on Olivero Road, a small stretch of homes and fields off Crows Landing and Hatch roads that many locals refer to as “Devil’s Street” because of the high level of crime in the area.
