Ceres mortgage broker pleads guilty

February 20, 2014

A Ceres mortgage broker and real estate agent faces up to three years in prison after pleading guilty Thursday to filing a false tax return. According to the U.S. attorney’s office, Maria Vega, 53, admitted to underreporting income from 2005, 2006 and 2007, when she owned and operated Vega’s Financial Services. In fact, Vega didn’t file returns at all for those years until 2008, when she filed back returns and “substantially underreported both her income and tax due for those tax years, the U.S. attorney’s office said in a news release. For 2006, Vega admitted underrreporting roughly $415,000. Vega is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. O’Neill on June 9.
