Info: AAA has partnered with the American Red Cross to create a disaster-preparedness workshop, “Ready, Set, Respond.” This 90-minute workshop will equip participants with knowledge on how to prepare for natural disasters common to the area and to serve as a Red Cross disaster-response volunteer. Info: Join the Central Sierra Audubon Society for its annual outing to Salt Springs Valley. Guide leader Steven Umland will meet participants about a quarter-mile along Rock Creek Road from its junction with Highway 4 near Copperopolis. Lunch will be scheduled near Salt Springs Resort. Participants are advised to bring food and water. Suggested apparel for outings includes muted colors in clothing and hats, sturdy shoes, a sun hat and sunscreen, and insect repellent. Dress in layers. Carry water and snacks, bring binoculars, spotting scopes and birding field guides if you have them. Heavy rain will cancels the outing. Where: Mark Twain Medical Center, 768 Mountain Ranch Road

Info: The California Highway Patrol is holding a teen driving program called Start Smart. The program is aimed at helping newly licensed and future licensed teenage drivers understand the critical responsibilities of driving. Event is free; one parent or guardian is required to attend with their teen. Advance registration required. For more information or to register to attend, call (209) 754-3541.


75 YEARS AGO: More than 60 people from all over California came to Modesto to participate in a registered trapshoot. The Modesto Trap Club held the trapshoot event, providing ammunition and food for the attendees. Modesto, a central point for trapshoots, attracted the second-largest turnout in the state the previous year.
