Police took a man into custody in north Modesto on Wednesday night after a chase that started in Merced County, went up Highway 99 and into – and through – Modesto.
Multiple law enforcement agencies were in pursuit, and witnesses reported seeing more than a dozen patrol cars involved.
The chase began about 6:30 p.m. More than an hour later, the suspect ended up ditching his vehicle – the front end reportedly became disabled – near Davis Community Park and fleeing on foot. A small number of students and families were on the Davis High campus, which was put on lockdown.
Authorities descended upon the area from Davis Park south to Whitmore Park at Bowen and College avenues. They set up a perimeter and called in a helicopter and dogs.
According to scanner communication, officers searched homes and sheds within the area and believed the man was armed because an ammunition clip, but no gun, was found in the abandoned vehicle.
The suspect was located hiding in a shed and arrested at about 8:40 p.m. Preliminary reports indicate the man was a parolee driving a stolen car.
