100 YEARS AGO: The firm of Prothero and Shipman discovers signs of oil production 121 feet under Knights Ferry soil. The firm, which was boring a well on a ranch in Knights Ferry, said it had no doubt that the sand was oil-bearing. In the past, there had been excitement over oil traces but nothing had been done to establish it commercially.
