Public service scholarships

In honor of the memory of John L. Hollis, former Modesto City Schools board member, Christian Public Servants annually awards several $750 scholarships to qualifying students who plan to have a career in public service. Hollis was a graduate of both Modesto Junior College and California State University, Stanislaus, and a founding member of CPS.

Applicants for the John L. Hollis Scholarships must be seniors in high school, recent high school graduates, or undergraduate college students with a declared intention of preparing for a career in public service (teaching, law enforcement, fire safety, nursing, public administration, political science, etc.)

Scholarships will be awarded based on academic achievement (a GPA of at least 3.0 is required), participation in church and/or other Christian ministries, and community service. Applications are due March 15. For more information, call Nancy Cline at (209) 324-1517 or email randncline@hotmail.com.

Graphic communications,

art scholarships

Applications are available for college scholarships designed for graphic communications or art majors. Up to $3,000 in Al Barr Memorial Scholarships will be awarded. The program, in its 14th year, is for Stanislaus County high school graduates and Modesto Junior College students who are enrolled in or have been accepted to a four-year college or university as a graphic communications or art major. Since 2000, nearly 50 awards totaling $23,000 have been offered.

Barr, a former newspaper graphic artist and award-winning watercolorist, died in 2000. After working at The Bee and the Pasadena Star News, Barr opened a graphic design studio in Modesto. He was a past president and 30-year member of the North Modesto Kiwanis Club, which directs the scholarship fund.

Application deadline is April 15. Requirements include a completed application, two samples of original artwork, two or more letters of recommendation, a copy of current high school or college transcripts and a one-page letter on why the applicant seeks a career in graphic communications or art. Applications can be downloaded from the scholarship page at www.northmodesto kiwanis .org.
