Kadry on Bowling: Hats off to local Bowlers to Veterans Link Tournament qualifers

Congratulations to the winners of the local qualifying rounds for the 2014 California State Bowlers to Veterans Link Tournament. They will represent Modesto at the state level on March 29 at Bowlium Lanes in Montclair.

Winners in their respective divisions and scores are: Men Classic – Jake Hall (777), Men A – Don Verastegui (761), Men B – Bryan Sanderson (588), Men C – Dave Rhodes (565), Men D – Bobby Cody (509); Women Classic – Bonnie Garber (724), Women A – Pam Marquez (665), Women B – Gloria Chin (580), Women C – Lina Carlson (518), Women D – Julianne Faria (465), Women E – Angie Karle (434).

The BVL started 71 years ago during World War II when bowlers banded together to support the troops. Now the BVL takes a leadership role in providing recreational therapy for the nation’s veterans, including purchase and use of sports equipment, arts and crafts supplies, pet therapy activities, games, music, drama, dance and community outings.

A big thumbs up goes to Modesto USBC BVL Chair Claudelle Bonaccinie for her diligent work year-round to raise money for the vets. Good luck to all the qualifiers at State. ...

It was back-to-back wins for Rich Custer in the Yosemite Scratch 6 gamer competition. Oakdale’s Custer qualified in the lead at a plus 138 then waited in the wings for the last step of the stepladder finals. The first match pitted father Wayne Garber against son Will Garber with the youngster winning 244-232. Will Garber went on to beat Joe Petrovich but hit a wall when he met second-place qualifier Brad Bufkin of Sacramento in a 220-216 match. Bufkin fell to Custer in the final game 191-181. Custer took home $314 for the win, and Bufkin earned $240 for second. ...

On Friday, the Ladies Luncheon Sweeper will roll at Yosemite starting at 9:30 a.m. with tournament scoring and a potluck. Check-in starts at 9 a.m. ... It’s that time of the year for the “Sweetheart Doubles” No-Tap Tournament at McHenry on Friday at 1 p.m. Check-in starts at 12:30 p.m., potluck at noon. Doubles teams are one man, one woman. ... The Modesto USBC will be holding its monthly instructional clinic on Sunday at McHenry starting at 10:30 a.m. Bowling and instruction are only $5 per person on a first-come, first-served basis. ... It’s time for youth bowlers and their parents to pick up scholarship applications for Modesto USBC scholarships. They are due back by April 15. Two scholarships are offered again this year: the Hall of Fame Scholarship and the Director’s Scholarship. Applications are available at the local bowling centers.
