Barbara Beasley: Can’t afford beds we’ve got

February 10, 2014

In Monday’s Bee, I read supervisors are expected to approve (today) building an $89 million, 384-bed expansion of the county jail system (“Beds for jail are on agenda,” Page B1).

In the same article, it said the county closed a 62-bed unit and two other units with 128 beds due to inadequate staffing. What are they thinking? Does anyone but me see what a waste of money and how ridiculous this is? Please help me understand how anyone could think this is a good idea.
