The Modesto region has been given a great opportunity, but we need your help to make it a success.
A major airline is interested in beginning nonstop service between Modesto and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), but needs assurances the route will be successful. The city of Modesto and the Modesto City-County Airport have launched DestinationLAX, a campaign to prove there is interest in flights to LA. This is a unique opportunity to get the community involved in a major economic decision.
With this campaign, businesses and individuals alike have a chance to show their support for new air service and all the benefits that come with it.
Through DestinationLAX, the city will collect $1 million in nonbinding pledges. These pledges will be used to show the airline that there is an audience for the route, and to commit our community to using the route once it becomes available. There are no prepaid funds, escrow accounts or hard cash required, just your pledge of what you could spend in flights to or through Los Angeles in one year.
Los Angeles is the perfect new destination for the region. Its the most popular city for Modesto business travelers, and LAX is the largest airport on the West Coast. This means that hundreds of destinations across the world are just one stop away no driving required. The airline will use 50-seat regional jets for the route, and provide two round-trip flights per day. If enough pledges are collected, the new service to LAX could begin as early as this summer.
Its not just about flying to L.A., either. Using Modestos airport keeps money in the Modesto community. New air service means more people will rent cars and buy gas here and not in Oakland. It means more business travelers will eat meals here and not in Sacramento. Flight crews will spend each night here and not in San Francisco. More conventions will be interested in our region, business travel will be easier, our wine region will get more exposure. The benefits to our community are real, but we cant achieve them without your pledge.
And you can participate in DestinationLAX even if you dont plan to travel this year. The local chapter of Make-A-Wish, Northeastern California and Northern Nevada, will accept direct donations as part of DestinationLAX. Donations will be used to buy airline tickets for wishes granted from the Modesto region. In this way, children in need can visit Disneyland, Hollywood and other exciting locations, and your donation will count toward the air service pledge goal.
The campaign ends Feb. 28, so we need your help today. Commit to supporting your local airport and the future prosperity of the region. Make a pledge at DestinationLAX.com.
