Gas prices have been steadily dropping in the past year. But Monday, at one business in south Modesto, the price took a serious fall.

Modesto Truck Plaza was selling gas for $2.99 per gallon. That’s 64 cents cheaper than the statewide average, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report. And it’s 22 cents lower than the next-lowest price in the area, at Costco in Turlock, according to the website ModestoGasPrices.com.

The good deal was an annual one-day effort on the part of the station’s owners to give their regular customers a hand, said Amanjit Sandhu, whose family took over Modesto Truck Plaza a couple of years ago. Though the owners pride themselves on always having some of the lowest prices in town, this was a special effort aimed at an economically disadvantaged neighborhood during a difficult time.

“We wait until a little bit after the holidays,” Sandhu said. “It’s just something we do for our regular clientele.”

But the deal was open to anyone who stopped by Monday. The owners take a financial hit on the gas, Sandhu said, but they like to do their part to help.

Word got around after people posted the news on social media sites, including a story on The Modesto Bee’s Facebook page. Many readers complimented the Sandhu family for giving back to the community. By early afternoon, drivers eager to get in on the deal had lined up at the station.

Danny Solorio of Modesto was one of them. He saw the notice about the sale online and went to Modesto Truck Plaza on his lunch break to take advantage of the low price and fill up the tank of his pickup. Because the truck runs on a V-8 engine, filling up is generally pretty pricey, so Solorio was happy to take advantage of the short-term sale.

Come today, however, “all the prices are going up,” Sandhu said.
