Kadry on Bowling: Oakdale’s Custer catches fire, takes Yosemite Scratch six-gamer

Oakdale’s Rich Custer won the Yosemite Scratch six-gamer title after shooting 1,084 – a 271 average – in an impressive four-game stepladder drive to the top.

Custer finished out qualifying in fourth and beat Salida’s Jim Gauthier 289-225 in the opening match. He went on to beat Kevin Wix Sr. 268-236. In Game 3, he struck in the 10th to beat Lincoln’s Kristin Warzinski 228-226.

In the championship, he went against top seed Robert Mayo of Bakersfield. Custer capped an impressive day with a 299-259 victory, capturing the $322 first price and a berth in the year-end Tournament of Champions. Mayo collected $240. ...

Local youth bowlers are mourning the loss of one of their friends with the passing of Gracie Doty. Nineteen-year-old Doty had been bowling in youth leagues since she was 10, and was a regular member of the San Joaquin Travel League. She died of injuries suffered in an auto accident. Services are Thursday at 11 a.m. at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel. Donations are being taken at McHenry Bowl for the family. ... Condolences also go out to Yosemite proprietor Jim Gordin on the loss of his mother, Gertrude Gordin. Charlotte Scott, Juanita Hickman and Char Moscato teamed up to win the Ladies No-Tap Trio Tournament at McHenry with a 2,439 total. Rolling a total of 2,372, the team of Angie Bosio, Mary Mount and Anja DeBoer finished in second. ... On Sunday, the February Scratch 6-Gamer competes at Yosemite. Check-in starts at 11 a.m. followed by tournament scoring at noon. The lanes will be oiled with the Detroit Open shot. Entry fee is $60 with optional brackets and side pots available. ... The Modesto USBC will be holding its monthly instructional clinic Sunday at McHenry starting at 10:30 a.m. Bowling and instruction is only $5 per person on a first-come/first-served basis. ...

Entry fee is a $1 donation to the BVL Fund. Scores bowled during league will be used to determine Modesto’s representatives in the State BVL held March 29 at Bowlium Lanes in Montclair. On Sunday, ESPN will televise the PBA league quarterfinals. This show will feature two of the eight teams in the league in a face off: the Brooklyn Styles presented by Concrete Software PBA Challenge and owed by actor Jesse Williams vs. L.A. X presented by Gobowling.com and owned by Los Angeles Clippers star guard Chris Paul. The show starts at noon. The match will include singles, alternate-ball doubles, Baker Trios and Baker team formats. The singles match will be a repeat of last week’s telecast – a head-to-head match between Jason Belmonte of L.A. X and Sean Rash of Brooklyn Styles.
