75 YEARS AGO: As part of California’s first unemployment program, Tuolumne County paid $119,755.04, or a total of 10,668 checks – 909 of which were issued in December – to those unemployed through no fault of their own. The state of California paid a total of $23,757,218.56, issuing 2,484,311 checks averaging slightly less than $10 each.
