ATWATER — Atwater police are looking for the driver of a vehicle that struck a 59-year-old man twice over the weekend.
Lt. Samuel Joseph said the driver first struck the man about 2:54 p.m. Saturday near Bellevue and Buhach roads.
The man told police he “screamed out to the driver” as he lost his balance. The driver then reportedly stopped, reversed direction and backed up over the man’s leg, police said.
“The victim was transported to Mercy hospital by ambulance with a possible broken leg,” police said in a news release.
The man’s name was withheld out of concern for his safety, police said.
Police said several witnesses followed the vehicle for a short time but lost sight of it.
The vehicle was described as a black Honda Civic with California license plate number 5WVN358.
The driver was described as a Latino woman in her 20s with shoulder-length hair and wearing a black jersey with the number 18. A female juvenile was spotted in the front passenger seat and a child in a car seat was seen in the rear of the vehicle, police said.
The vehicle is registered locally. However, a check of the residence determined that it was occupied by new owners, police said.
Investigators are asking for the public’s help finding the driver.
