MJC BASKETBALL TRIES TO END LEAGUE SLUMP
The Modesto Junior College men will try to snap a two-game Big 8 Conference losing streak against Diablo Valley at 7:30 tonight at MJC Gym. The Pirates (10-11, 3-3) lost momentum with last week’s losses to Sierra and league-leading Cosumnes River. Diablo Valley (16-4, 4-2) has won two in a row. The MJC women (6-11, 0-6) have lost seven straight – all were teams ranked in the top 13 in Northern California – going into tonight’s game at 5:30 against DVC (13-8, 2-4).
PIRATES BASEBALL OPENS SEASON TODAY
The Modesto Junior College baseball team, which features a more talented roster than the 2012-13 Pirates who placed fifth in the Big 8 Conference and 18-18 overall, open the season at 2 p.m. today at Mission College in San Jose. MJC plays its home opener on Friday against De Anza to begin a five-game homestand.
SHELDON BASKETBALL RECEIVES SANCTIONS
The Sheldon High School (Sacramento) boys basketball team was sanctioned by the Sac-Joaquin Section on Monday for numerous rules violations. Five current players have been declared ineligible, and the team will not be allowed to participate in the playoffs this season, according to a section press statement. In addition, the Huskies will be placed on probation for the remainder of this year, as well as the next two seasons. An eighth-grade student also will be ineligible to play at Sheldon until the 2016-17 school year (though he could compete at another school next season). Violations include Providing a free ticket to postseason events and parents paying for the meals of potential players not enrolled at Sheldon at the time.
