The Bee’s Book of Dreams focuses on organizations that help provide the basics to the neediest in our community, among them Advancing Vibrant Communities. Speaking at the awards ceremony is Michael Douglass of the faith-based group that connects volunteers from local churches with opportunities to serve neighborhoods in need, the poor, the elderly and the disabled.

Representatives of 14 nonprofit groups gathered at The Modesto Bee’s offices Friday morning to receive money raised by the annual A Book of Dreams fundraiser.

The 2013 program brought in $62,939.65, said Eric Johnston, The Bee’s publisher and president. It’s the 24th year The Bee has published A Book of Dreams, which raises money to help the neediest in the community.

“It’s a great culmination of what started more than two decades ago,” Johnston said. “It’s really evolved into a great community spirit.”

The Bee partners with the Stanislaus Community Foundation, which manages the donations and cuts the checks to the nonprofit groups. Both the foundation and The Bee absorb their costs associated with the program, Johnston said, so 100 percent of what is raised goes back into the community.

“We’re honored to help support each of you,” foundation Chief Executive Officer Marian Kaanon said.

Those collecting the checks were invited to discuss the work their groups do and their plans for the year ahead. Each expressed gratitude for all of the donations that came in, ranging from a few dollars to thousands.

“I feel like this is the Academy Awards,” said Monica Ojcius, fund development director for the Center for Human Services, “except we’re all winners.”
