Janet DeBoer: Tickets make downtown Modesto unfriendly

January 22, 2014

The next time our city officials and government agencies tell us that they are anxious to get more people downtown to shop and do business, don’t believe them! My husband and I both got parking tickets in late December. We were downtown to meet with our accountant, and it took longer than one hour. I guess we were supposed to leave his office, move our vehicles and then return to finish our business. Surely many others have faced this same dilemma. Pay the accountant for his time or pay a parking ticket.

I have lived in Modesto a long time, and I like to support our local businesses. In December alone, I attended the Mannheim Steamroller concert at the Gallo Center, and made purchases at the Camera Center, Dented Chef and Antique Emporium. No more. I will shop and do business where the parking is easy and free – and that is not in downtown Modesto.
