Westside Ministries leads Turlock food-donation effort

— Staff and volunteers at Turlock’s Westside Ministries spent Martin Luther King Jr. Day packing food boxes for an upcoming giveaway.

With help from members of All Saints University Parish and Monte Vista Chapel, they packed enough canned and boxed nonperishables to give 300 to 400 families 40 to 50 pounds each, said JoLynn DiGrazia, director of Westside Ministries. Excess food is being donated to the Salvation Army Turlock Corps and United Samaritans, she said.

Doing the packing on MLK Day is a fitting way to honor King, DiGrazia said, and the giveaway comes at a time when food pantry shelves still may be recovering from holiday demand.

The giveaway is scheduled for Sunday, starting at 9 a.m., and people can sign up in advance through Thursday. To qualify, they need to bring a utility bill or other document that shows their home address. People also can sign up upon arrival Sunday starting at 8:30 a.m.; the food is distributed on a first-come basis. For more information, call (209) 667-8593 or go to www.westsideministriesturlock.com. Westside Ministries is at 952 Columbia St., Turlock.
