Beverly Sousa: Don't prejudge Father Kelly

January 16, 2014

Believe it or not, headlines sell newspapers. In this country, when I was growing up, you were innocent until proven guilty. It was not the other way around. The Bee headline “Priest could face 14 years in abuse case” (Jan. 15, Page A1) about Father Michael Kelly would have you believe the man was already convicted! Father Kelly has been our friend, our priest and a part of our family. Our relationship with him goes back to 1973. He has spent many hours with our children and grandchildren and we will always support him and defend him. These accusations have ruined his health. He returned to his family in Ireland for solace. Those of us who really know him and love him were never given the opportunity to speak on his behalf in the civil trial. There were many who were ready and willing. We can now only pray on his behalf that an impartial jury will give him a fair trial.
