Our View: Church’s abuse scandal must never happen again

January 16, 2014

The Stockton Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church did the necessary thing by declaring bankruptcy this week. Whether it was the right thing, an expedient thing, or something done to exclude some of the church’s assets from lawyers is all open for debate. But the fact is, the diocese owes more than it can possibly pay to victims of priests who abused young people. No matter how much money the victims finally receive, it is unlikely that it will repair the lasting damage of having a trusted figure violate a sacred trust. We hope the victims can find peace and healing. It would not seem fair for parishes where no one was abused to bear part of this burden, but that will have to be worked out by the courts. However that is resolved, it shouldn’t change the obligation of all Catholics: to help the victims recover and to do all within their power to make certain it never happens again.
