Driver loses consciousness, hits teen near MJC

Bee Staff ReportsJanuary 14, 2014

An 18-year-old woman suffered severe injuries when she was hit by a car while being dropped off in front of Modesto Junior College on Tuesday afternoon.

The driver of an eastbound Jeep stopped in the road on Coldwell Avenue between Tully Road and College Avenue to let out the teenager.

The 53-year-old driver of a Toyota stopped briefly behind the Jeep but suffered a medical episode and lost consciousness, said Modesto police spokeswoman Heather Graves.

While he was unconscious, the Toyota driver’s foot hit the accelerator and the Toyota veered to the right, hitting the back right side of the Jeep, then the woman. The Toyota stopped when it crashed into three parked cars, Graves said.

The 18-year-old woman, Kurnesia Benion, was taken to a hospital with severe leg and facial injuries.

The driver of the Toyota was taken to a local hospital for observation.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision, Graves said.
