Man identified in south Modesto fatal wreck

January 10, 2014

A Modesto man who died after rear-ending another car was identified Friday by the Stanislaus County coroner’s office as Rick Lewallen. The 60-year-old man was driving a 1953 Chevrolet pickup north on Seventh Street in south Modesto when he failed to react to stopped traffic in front of him near the intersection of Blankenburg Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. Lewallen’s truck hit the back of a Nissan Altima at an unknown speed, causing major damage to both cars. The Nissan hit a Toyota stopped in front of it, causing minor damage. Lewallen was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Officers are investigating why he did not stop, including the possibility that he suffered medical issues prior to the crash. The driver of the Nissan, 49-year-old Serafina Berber, was taken to Memorial Medical Center with minor injuries. The driver of the Toyota was not injured.
