Newman man arrested in shooting of 2 teens

January 10, 2014

Newman police on Friday morning arrested a man suspected in the shooting of two teenagers last month. Officers searched the home of Pedro Garcia, 22, in the 1300 block of P Street in Newman about 9 a.m., Lt. Brett Short said in a news release. Garcia was arrested in connection with the Dec. 29 shooting of a 15-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl. The teenagers were shot by one of several people in a passing car in the 1500 block of Q Street, just three blocks from Garcia’s home. Both have since recovered from their injuries. Short said the shooting was gang-related. Inside Garcia’s home, officers found a handgun and a loaded sawed-off shotgun. He was booked at the Stanislaus County jail on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a short-barreled shotgun. There are additional suspects involved in the incident and officers are still in the process of determining their roles and identities. Authorities ask anyone with additional information about the case to contact Officer Ronil Singh at (209) 862-2902 or Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Tipsters can text tips to CRIMES (274637) by typing “TIP704” plus the message. Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
