Modesto man sentenced in sex case

January 6, 2014

A Modesto man was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading no contest to performing a lewd and lascivious act on a child younger than 14 years old, according to the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office.

Jonathan Chavez, 22, was baby-sitting a 12-year-old relative when the incident occurred in 2010. Chavez was 19 at the time.

According to Deputy District Attorney Annette Rees, Chavez tried to have sex with the child but was dissuaded. He did assault her, however, and she told her mother the next day. Superior Court Judge Linda McFadden sentenced Chavez to three years in prison.

The defendant will have to register as a sex offender for life and will be subject to evaluation as a potential sexually violent predator prior to his parole.
