Focus on Education (1/7/13)

January 6, 2014

The framework for teaching English to Common Core standards in California is open for public comment. The public has until Feb. 13 to review the English Language Arts Common Core Framework, notes a release from state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. The draft framework is on the California Department of Education Web site,, where the public may leave comments via the digital survey or by email. Paper versions are available to view with Bob Gausmann at the Stanislaus County Office of Education, 1100 H St., Modesto, and John Magneson at the Merced County Office of Education, 632 W. 13th St., Merced. The proposed framework ties language development for English learners to what’s being taught in the curriculum – something that was not part of the program before. It includes strategies for extending literacy standards into other subject areas and encouraging teachers to teach English standards through a report on social studies.

Modesto Bee is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
