Hospice of Emanuel in Turlock sold to new operator

— Emanuel Medical Center announced Monday that it has sold its hospice in advance of being acquired by Tenet Healthcare Corp.

Hospice of Emanuel is now operated by CovenantCare at Home, a branch of the church that founded the hospital in 1917. The change will not affect staffing at the hospice, which has 18 employees and 37 volunteers serving terminally ill people and their families.

“The transition has gone very smoothly for all involved, especially the patients,” said an email from Joseph Haughney, president of CovenantCare at Home, based in Skokie, Ill.

The new name is CovenantCare Hospice. The sale price was not disclosed for the operation, which will remain nonprofit.

CovenantCare at Home has offered other home-based services in Turlock, from light housekeeping to around-the-clock nursing care, since 2008.

“This sale will serve the community by offering residents of Turlock and Central California a seamless opportunity to obtain faith-based hospice and home health services,” said John Sigsbury, president and chief executive officer at Emanuel Medical Center, in a news release.

Tenet, a for-profit chain based in Dallas, agreed last year to acquire the hospital for $131 million. It also owns Doctors Medical Center of Modesto and Doctors Hospital of Manteca.

The Emanuel deal has passed an antitrust review by the Federal Trade Commission and could get a final OK from the state attorney general this month. Tenet is offering jobs to employees of the Turlock hospital.

CovenantCare at Home is part of the Evangelical Covenant Church, based in Chicago. The church also owns the Covenant Village of Turlock retirement community.

The hospice, founded in 1981, continues to work out of its Colorado Avenue office with Dr. James MacLaren as medical director. Registered nurse Laura Springston remains in charge of day-to-day operations, reporting to registered nurse Ronda Malmberg, administrator of the CovenantCare at Home agency in Turlock.
