Focus on Education: Turlock, Sylvan, SIFA, Newman-Crows Landing and more

The Turlock Unified School District board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the professional development center on the eCademy Charter site, 1100 Cahill Ave., Turlock. Trustees will hear an overview and be asked to approve the 2012-13 financial audit and a notice of completion for Wakefield School modernization. The board will also vote on recognizing Feb. 12 as TUSD Heart Day, with information on Camp Taylor, a free summer camp for children with heart disease.


The Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District board will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the McConnell Adult Education Center, 1348 Patchett Drive, Newman. Trustees will discuss the secondary math transition in Common Core and block schedules for Orestimba High School and Yolo Middle School. There will also be a first reading of policy updates and a vote on a certificate of participation payoff.


The Summerville Union High School District board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the high school library, 17555 Tuolumne Road, Tuolumne. Science and senior seminar presentations will be showcased and a letter from members of the senior class will be heard. The board will be asked to approve the 2012-13 audit and discuss planning the bus barn. New courses in robotics, manufacturing and veterinary science will get a first reading.


The January meeting of the Schools Infrastructure and Financing Agency board for Modesto City, Sylvan and Stanislaus Union school districts, scheduled for Wednesday, is canceled. For more information, contact Becky Meredith, secretary to the board, at (209) 574-5000, ext. 210.


The Ceres Unified School District Board will meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the district Conference Room C, 2503 Lawrence St., Ceres, for a study session on board protocols and the Local Control Funding Formula and community accountability plan. The board will reconvene at 7 p.m. in the boardroom for its regular meeting. Trustees will be asked to increase pay for substitute teachers from $100 to $130 a day to a range of $120 to $160 per day, and to sign off on a three-year contract paying Superintendent Scott Siegel $213,812 a year plus health care and annuity.


Fremont Open Plan, Modesto City Schools’ public alternative school for kindergarten through sixth grade, will hold sign-ups for school tours in January. Kindergarten enrollment is lottery-based and requires parent participation. For children to be included in the 2014-15 school year lottery, a parent or guardian must register for a tour and sign up to attend two mandatory parent meetings. Sign-ups are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays, Jan. 8 to 31, at the Fremont Elementary School office, 1220 W. Orangeburg Ave. For more information, call (209) 576-4679.


The Sylvan Union School District will hold a second Budget Town Hall Meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 21 in the Sylvan School multipurpose room, 2908 Coffee Road, Modesto. The meeting is to gather input from parents, community members and staff members as the 2014-2015 budget is being developed. The state’s new Local Control Funding Formula for school districts encourages parents and community members to fully participate in the budget planning process. There will be free child care and refreshments at the meeting.
