Robert Raspo: It’s news when homeless are dying in Modesto

December 29, 2013

Last week The Modesto Bee had an article about a group in Modesto that honors the homeless who have died in our community during the year with a memorial celebration (“ Vigil will honor local homeless people who died,” Dec. 21, Page B1). I was surprised, or maybe I have never given it a thought, at the numbers who have died. I am asking The Modesto Bee to let us know each time one of our homeless residents dies so we can be kept aware in our souls of the struggle some of our fellow Modestans face each day.

Pope Francis asked, “How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies, but it is news when the stock market loses 2 points?”

May the child of Christmas open our hearts to the true needy of our community.
