Richard Braun: Finding heroes at Christmas

December 27, 2013

Many have seen around the county the big blue Toys for Tots tubs. I had seen them for years and not thought much about them until Christmas week.

I am helping with a small distribution of toys and came across Marcus and Elizabeth Schoals, the co-coordinators for the entire countywide effort. These two unsung heroes took it upon themselves the tremendous task of picking up donations, finding locations for distribution, bagging the thousands of toys and then ensuring that they got delivered. They also handed out the toys that didn’t have a distribution center. All of that with very few volunteers.

I was concerned when my small group of toys wasn’t ready in time only to find out that there were only four people bagging. If more people like the Schoals would take the time to volunteer, the task would be easy. As it is, they are doing it mostly by themselves and still keeping a smile and a positive attitude. They are my heroes!
